The founder of Facebook (now called “Meta”) Mark Zuckerberg embarked on a project dedicated to the development of virtual reality: “The Metaverse” which is a turning point in the world of technology. A world everything is possible to do what you want.
Mark Zuckerberg explains on his Facebook page: “In recent decades, technology has empowered people to connect and express themselves more naturally. When I started Facebook, we typed texts on websites. When we got phones with cameras, the internet became more visual and mobile. (…) We went from desktop computers to the web, then to mobile; from texts to photos, then to videos. (…) The next platform will be more immersive – a living, embodied internet, where you live the experience, not just watch it. It's called the Metaverse and it's about every product we make."
What is the metaverse?
The metaverse is a virtual world allowing you to choose an avatar by being present in any type of environment with different people via virtual reality. “To feel truly present alongside another person is the ultimate dream of social media technology.
Mark Zuckerberg writes: "In the metaverse, you will be able to do almost anything you imagine: be surrounded by friends and family, work, learn, play, buy, create". He also adds: "In the future, you'll be able to teleport instantly, in the form of a hologram, to your desktop, without moving. You can attend a concert with friends, or burst into your parents' living room to hear from them.
How does the Metaverse work?
The metaverse works by having a virtual reality headset or virtual reality glasses in it.
In this presentation video, Mark Zuckerberg explains that it is possible to play cards with friends, while floating in space, in a 3D environment.
The metaverse also allows you to transport yourself to the ideal house, with a view of different landscapes, according to everyone's tastes. Thus, “the metaverse is made up of several virtual spaces in which you can create and explore, in the presence of other people who are not in the same physical space as you”.
What currency to use for the Metaverse?
The metaverse consists of several virtual worlds. They are therefore not the same currency that we use in the world. The 3 most popular currencies for “Trade” in the metaverse are the Decentraland (MANA), The SandBox (SAND) and the Enjin Coin (Enjin).
There will of course be a question of economy, with the implementation of new systems based on crypto currencies or even NFTs (“nun fungible tokens” in English, which means “non-exchangeable tokens”). Zuckerberg explains that users will be able to purchase goods and services. “We are developing a Horizon Marketplace, where creators will be able to show their digital creations in 3D, and sell them”.
Companies interested in the Metaverse
Some companies like Google, Microsoft, Tencent, video game providers are interested in the Metaverse. There are also companies owning Chinese social networks and messaging platforms such as WeChat and Tencent QQ. There is also Epic Games, a video game company that already owns one of the largest and most developed metaverse platforms today: Fortnite. Fortnite is a video game where 100 players land on a map where they must stay alive until they win by being the last one alive. There is also Binance who are interested in it. Binance has a very important role in the metaverse, because of the importance of cryptocurrencies and blockchain.
To conclude, the realism of virtual worlds is more attractive in video games. But for Elon Musk, the terms web3 and metaverse are just “kind of buzzwordy.”
